Queenslanders are on watch once again as the Australian Bureau of Meteorology advise developing tropical cyclone is likely to impact the northern Queensland coast from Wednesday this week.

While Brisbane residents may not feel the brunt of Kirrily itself, the cyclone is expected to bring significant rainfall to southeast Queensland over the long weekend.

We have put together a shortlist to help you make sure these potentially frightening times are less uncertain.

  • Register for Brisbane City Council’s early warning alerts to give yourself a heads up before severe storms hit or for other natural disaster emergencies.
  • Make sure you are adequately insured.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – suggested items include a portable battery-powered radio, torches, candles with waterproof matches, a first aid kit, a waterproof bag for clothing and valuables, a list of emergency contact numbers and a supply of drinking water and canned or dried food.
  • Check to see if your property is at risk of flooding on Council’s flood awareness map.
    Find your nearest sandbag depot
  • Check your home is ready – clean gutters and downpipes, secure loose objects outdoors, check that your roofing is in good condition.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts stored on your phone or in an easy to reference location.
