There is so much to enjoy about Brisbane, particularly the wonderful green and open spaces around the city. On any given weekend, you’ll see people out in their community, in the great outdoors enjoying the natural environment.

Anyone living in Brisbane though, understands that Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world and finding shade is so important.

One thing Council can do to make our neighbourhoods more walkable and sun-safe is to plant street trees.

Brisbane Now understands that the Opposition in Brisbane City Council have been calling for action to address a disturbing trend when it comes to these trees.

Leader of the Opposition, Councillor Jared Cassidy explained what’s been happening to street trees across the city.

“We know that the Lord Mayor has taken advantage of planting street trees for media attention, inviting cameras along for publicity.”

“What happens after the cameras leave, and the trees have been planted though is that they are left to die.”

“There needs to be an audit on of the tree planting program to investigate just how many trees are being neglected, dying and then never being replaced.”

“Another concern the Opposition has, is that this work is now almost entirely contracted out which means instead of a rolling program of replacing trees, the location goes on a list that may never be looked at.”

Instead of planting trees to get statistics up, Brisbane Labor has announced that as part of their Climate Resilient City policy, they will plant an additional 2 million trees across the city provide more shade in parks and along footpaths.

Lord Mayoral candidate Tracey Price understands how important making Brisbane a more climate resilient city is.

“The plan we have announced is comprehensive and is a roadmap to future proofing our incredibly way of life in Brisbane.”

“As the effects of climate change continue to grow, it’s our job to ensure the city and suburbs are as prepared as they can be to deal with them.”

“My team isn’t afraid to acknowledge that climate change is one of the greatest challenges our city, state and indeed country will face into the future.”

“I am determined to make Brisbane truly climate resilient by properly funding initiatives like increased drainage infrastructure, and a permanent organic recycling program.”

“As Lord Mayor, I can’t wait to see these new trees grow, and shade our community for years to come.”
