Brisbane Labor Councillor Emily Kim of Calamvale Ward is fighting an uphill battle against Brisbane’s LNP Lord Mayor and Council, calling for basic infrastructure to support the growth of her community.
Cr. Kim has opened a petition under her name and is actively supporting two others started by residents in her ward. Cr. Kim took BrisbaneNow around her ward to check out what residents are calling for.
On Pallara Avenue and Gooderham Road, residents are calling for traffic lights, a speed camera and warning signage. The head petitioner claims that in October, a cyclist sustained injuries in an accident, and other traffic collisions have occurred in the months prior. As the population of Pallara and surrounds only grows, resident’s calls safer streets grows too.
Next, Benhiam and Ormskirk Streets near the popular Calamvale District Park. On Benhiam Street is a suite of new developments and sold land. However, the roads are currently unsealed, with old footpath on Ormskirk Street broken and lacking connection to Benhiam Street. Parkrunners use these streets on their route. Storm drainage is also an issue, with backed up water leading to potholes and blown tires. A response to an earlier petition was already provided, but Cr. Kim is unhappy with the response and willing to continue the fight.
The most popular petition currently live in Calamvale is the one headed by Cr. Kim herself. In the petition, she writes, “The current situation places thousands of children, families, teachers and local businesses at risk. Daily congestion on Gowan Rd and Illaweena St has reached unsafe levels with long queues, limited pick up and drop off capacity and students navigating four lanes of traffic without a safer crossing.”
Also in Calamvale is a petition for improvements on Hamish Street, Calamvale. The head petitioner notes: “Our concern has been strengthened by the recent and tragic loss of a former member of our learning community, who was fatally struck by a car. While we respect the ongoing investigation, this tragedy highlights the urgent need for preventative action to protect our community.”
