They carry thousands of residents and tourists across the river every single day, but within a few hours Brisbane City Council has pulled all nine monohull ferries off the water.
The Lord Mayor cited safety concerns and ‘deterioration’ as the reason for suspending the services at such short notice.
The decision has left thousands of ferry users high and dry wondering if and when the monohulls will be put back on the water.
Deputy Opposition Leader for Brisbane City Council Kara Cook has slammed the move to take the ferries out of action within hours of announcing it.
“Adrian Schrinner has serious questions to answer,” Cr Cook said.
“Pulling these ferries from the water without warning is going to cause chaos for Brisbane commuters come Monday morning,” she said.
Replacement shuttle bus services are being put in place with stops at the Story Bridge and Eagle street.
Ferry users who get on near Holman street and Thornton street stops will now have to use the existing 234 bus service.
