In Brisbane City Council’s first meeting back for the year, Independent Councillor Nicole Johnston got up to move a motion calling for Brisbane City Council to name a park in her ward of Tennyson after tennis superstar, and now three time grand slam champion, Ash Barty.
The motion put forward by Cr Johnston read “That, with Ms Barty’s agreement, this Council names Godiva Ave Park bordered by King Arthur Terrace and Godiva Ave, Yeerongpilly, adjacent to the Queensland Tennis Centre, in honour of Ash Barty, an extraordinary Queensland sportswoman, world number one and Australian Open Champion.”
Labor Councillors supported the motion with Labor Leader Jared Cassidy seconding it.
But when the motion was put forward in the Council chamber, LNP Councillors attempted to shut down debate.
The LNP, who are in charge of City Hall and have voting majority, then used their numbers to prevent the motion from passing.
Do you think Brisbane City Council should name a park after Ash Barty?
