WHAT’S ON: ANZAC DAY IN BRISBANE

Anzac Day in Brisbane is a stirring mix of solemn reflection and community spirit — where silence falls before sunrise in the city before marches commence right across the suburbs.

Whether you’re a committed dawn riser or someone who attends a mid-morning march after a coffee, there’s a service somewhere near you this Friday, 25 April 2025.

Brisbane’s main event is the Dawn Service at Anzac Square.

Thousands gather before the sun even thinks about rising. Set your alarm and make your way to the Shrine of Remembrance with plenty of time to spare, because the service starts at the very precise and symbolic time of 4:28 AM.

Not a morning person? That’s okay. The Anzac Day Parade along Adelaide Street kicks off at 9:45 AM and runs until lunch. Veterans, current servicemen and women, marching bands, cadets, and even the odd bagpipe ensemble come together for this proud city tradition.

Afterwards, you can pop into the Anzac Square Memorial Galleries, open from 5:30 AM to 3:00 PM, for a fascinating look at Queensland’s military history—ideal for both history buffs and anyone needing a quiet moment.

On Thursday, 24 April, there’s a touching Nurses Memorial Candlelight Vigil from 5:30 PM, also at Anzac Square. It’s a chance to acknowledge the vital role nurses played (and continue to play) in war and peace.

Of course, if the CBD feels like too much traffic and too little parking, Brisbane’s suburbs have got you sorted.

Find an Anzac Day service in your local area by searching for a service on the RSL Queensland website.

After the morning services, many Brisbane locals head to their nearest RSL for a game of two-up, a larrikin-spirited, yet deeply traditional part of Anzac Day. Played legally only on 25 April each year, two-up is a simple coin-flipping game once beloved by Aussie soldiers during World War I. Today, it’s a way for people of all ages to gather in good spirits, share a drink, swap stories, and celebrate the mateship and humour that define the Anzac legacy. Just remember to bring your gold coins and a bit of luck! Check out your local RSL for more details.

From the stillness of dawn to the warmth of suburban services and RSLs full of stories, Anzac Day is about reflection, respect, and community. However you commemorate, it’s a huge part of Australia’s history to remember and honour all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
