DONATE TO WOMEN IN NEED THIS FESTIVE SEASON WITH SHARE THE DIGNITY

As the festive season approaches, Share the Dignity’s “It’s in the Bag” campaign is back, offering a wonderful opportunity to give back to women and girls waking up in a domestic violence refuge or homeless shelter.

The annual campaign encourages people to donate essential items in handbags to help vulnerable women, particularly those experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or financial hardship, who may otherwise go without basic toiletries and necessities.

Member for Sandgate, Bisma Asif and Cr Jared Cassidy helped pack bags for the charity earlier this year.

The “It’s in the Bag” campaign, which runs from November 15th to December 1st, calls for donations of bags filled with essential items for women and teens. Donors are encouraged to pack a new or gently used handbag with items such as:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Soap, deodorant, and sanitary items
  • Reusable water bottles or snacks
  • Extras like socks, face masks, or even small treats and encouraging notes

There are three types of bags that can be donated.

How to Get Involved

  1. Assemble Your Bag: Use a bag you no longer need or purchase a new one, then fill it with essential items. Share the Dignity encourages personal touches like handwritten notes or small treats, which add a heartfelt gesture to each bag.
  2. Drop-Off Locations: Once your bag is ready, drop it off at a participating Bunnings Warehouse during the campaign dates. Bunnings stores across Australia act as collection points, making it easy to participate. A full list of locations to donate can be found here.
  3. Donate Online: For those who can’t create a bag, Share the Dignity also accepts monetary donations. These funds go towards purchasing and distributing essentials to those who may otherwise miss out.

By putting together an It’s in the Bag you’re making Christmas brighter for someone in a domestic violence refuge.

Share the Dignity also offer other ways to get involved, including hosting packing parties or creating a Bestie Bag. More details on their website.
