PAY IT FORWARD THIS PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

Morningside Ward Councillor, Lucy Collier has teamed up with local charity, The Nurtured Village Hampers to create support and awareness this Perinatal Mental Health Week (17-23 November).

They’ve launched a “pay it forward” campaign with Apollo Coffee House in Bulimba, where residents can buy a coffee for a local mum to brighten their day.

Perinatal Mental Health week focuses on the challenges faced in conception, pregnancy and early parenthood.

1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads experience perinatal depression and anxiety, which is around 100-thousand parents per year.

The transition to parenthood can be a rollercoaster, so the community is being reminded to check in on new parents this week.

Whether you’re experiencing mental health challenges yourself, or if you’re concerned about a loved one, reaching out to talk can help.

Cr Collier is encouraging community members to start the converstation this Perinatal Mental Health Week.

“There’s nothing like a good cup of coffee when you’re a tired mum. It’s a simple gesture, but it may brighten someone’s day and that’s what it’s all about.

“I’m so proud to work alongside the Nurtured Village Hampers, the work Emma and her team of volunteers do is vital to helping families who are in the trenches after having a baby.

“I’d also like to thank Apollo Coffee House for getting on board.”

Nurtured Village founder, Emma Gray says showing love and support to new parents can make the world of difference.

“Our number one mission is supporting the mental health of Aussie mums, it can be an isolating time.

“Showing love and support to new mums and dads makes a real difference to their lives.

“Getting out for a walk or a coffee is a great way to get people talking about their mental health and supporting friends in need.

“I’d like to encourage the whole community to pay-it-forward this week by shouting a coffee at Apollo Coffee House.”
