Alfred is the name on Queenslander’s lips this week with Cyclone Alfred expected to make landfall on Wednesday or Thursday somewhere between Bundaberg and the Gold Coast.
What many don’t know, is that the headlines could have been vastly different if the Bureau of Meteorology hadn’t changed the cyclone’s name.
The BoM follows a predetermined list of cyclone names, alternating between male and female names in alphabetical order. This particular weather system was meant to be named Anthony, a name shared by the Australian Prime Minister.
Luckily, when a name matches that of a prominent public figure, the BoM may choose to skip it to prevent any potential confusion. In this case, the change also prevented Albo copping some awkward headlines.
In a time when accurate and swift information is crucial, the last thing Australians needed was misleading headlines like “Anthony Causes Havoc Across Queensland” or “Anthony Leaves a Trail of Destruction.”
So Cyclone Alfred it is.
