In great news for public transport users and visitors to the Sunshine State, the State Government has announced 50-cent fares are here to stay.
Premier Steven Miles introduced the policy in August stating it was a “use it or lose it” trial and following it’s success, has declared that he will keep it in place beyond the 6-month trial period if re-elected in October.
Since the introduction of Queensland’s 50-cent fare trial in early August, public transport patronage has seen a significant boost across South East Queensland. Overall, trips increased by around 14.5% compared to the same period in the previous year, with specific modes like ferries experiencing a whopping 40.6% rise. Rail trips grew by 16%, and buses saw a 12.1% increase. The trial has also surpassed pre-COVID levels, with weekend trips up by as much as 30-40%.
These numbers reflect the positive impact of the fare reduction, which has also saved commuters over $29 million in its first month.

With the election looming the Opposition Leader was quick to join the public transport media frenzy, declaring that he would also come to the party and keep 50-cent fares permanent across Queensland.
The scheme allows eligible groups, including school students, seniors, and those with concession cards, to travel on public buses, trains, and ferries for just 50 cents a trip. Whether you’re in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast, or in regional Queensland, the 50c fare is available throughout the TransLink network.
These cheaper fares don’t just make travel easier—they also help reduce traffic on the roads. As more people switch from driving to public transport, congestion eases up, and carbon emissions go down.
For now, commuters can sit back and enjoy the ride, knowing they’ve got an affordable way to get around Queensland!
