It seems as though this year across Brisbane as soon as the Halloween pumpkins were tossed away, Christmas trees started popping up across the suburbs.
Is there a day you’re meant to put up the tree?
Of course, there’s the early birds. The people who love to blast Michael Buble and Mariah Carey for as long as socially acceptable. The sentiment seems to be, “Why wait?” With the school year winding down, the promise of summer, and days getting longer, it’s easy to see why some jump right into the season. There’s no advent calendars for November though, so a two month run in with no clear countdown can be a long wait for Santa.
For the traditionalists, December 1 seems to be the ‘ideal date’. It’s when the elves begin to arrive in homes and when the chocolate squares on advent calendars can finally be torn open. The first weekend in December also rivals this, as it’s when families have time to get together and install the tinsel and baubles.

The late bloomers use the “twelve days of Christmas” as an excuse to start late and then of course, there’s the Christmas ‘grinches’ who don’t believe in the magic at all.
Ultimately, there’s no “right” or “wrong” day to put up the tree. Whether you go with a traditional date, a weekend convenience, or whenever you’re just ready for Christmas, pick the day that brings you the most joy. Soon enough we’ll be toasting hot cross buns!
