Boy Swallows Universe.

A story about the trials and tribulations of a boy growing up in Brisbane’s outer suburbs in the 80’s when parts of Queensland were gripped by Heroin.

It’s a story about the survival of a family who is struggling against the odds.

“Eli Bell’s childhood in the outer Brisbane suburbs is far from the idyllic 1980s haze some kids would remember. His alcoholic dad has shot through, his mum is in jail, his stepfather’s dealing heroin, his brother Gus won’t talk and silently swirls cryptic messages in the air with his finger, and his babysitter Slim is a convicted killer and infamous escapee from Boggo Road Gaol.” – QLD THEATRE

Brisbane author Trent Dalton released his book in 2018 and it hit the scene with monumental success.

It won four awards at the Australian Book Industry Awards; Book of the Year, Literary Book of the Year, the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year and Audio Book of the Year.

It’s the first time in history one author has won all four major prizes at the ABIAs.

Playwright Tim McGarry then adapted the book for stage and Boy Swallows Universe the production was born.

“When I first read the novel, I could just see the scenes unfolding on the stage.” Tim McGarry said.

“It’s just so dramatic and so theatrical and it’s a work that has all the qualities that make a hilariously funny, heart-breaking, and exhilarating piece of theatre.”

The play is showing from August 30 to October 3 2021.
