HOW SLATER’S GAMBLE COULD PAY OFF TONIGHT

The 2025 Origin Series reaches its dramatic conclusion tonight with QLD facing off NSW on enemy turf at Accor Stadium, Sydney. Fans who cannot make it live can tune in to Channel 9 and 9Now.

Despite keeping the same squad from Game 2, the Blues are still the bookie’s favourites to win with Payne Hass and Brian To’o cleared for the field. To pull off an upset, it is up to Queensland to get in the lead early and to keep it that way after almost losing their lead in Game 2. Queensland can smell nerves from a mile off, and a perceived drop in confidence from the recently injured NSW players will be jumped on.

Captain Cameron Munster returns to the field after his late father’s passing. If Munster can carve out a victory during this sombre time, he will surely join the greats of Maroon history.

In keeping with tradition, coach Billy Slater has smashed the maroon button for the decider – recalling veteran Josh Papalii, who’s last Origin game was in 2022, to strengthen the forward pack.

Facing off against a formidable NSW centre pairing of Latrell Mitchell and Stephen Crichton are newbies Gehamat Shibasaki and Robert Toia. It’s an intriguing play by Slater and effectively a David vs Goliath battle.

While Slater named Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga for last year’s decider, both are out with injuries. So, Slater will be wielding The Hammer (Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow) to attack the Blue’s disciplined defence.

If you want to get out and about to enjoy the game, try these spots:
