During Tuesday’s Brisbane City Council meeting, Brisbane’s LNP-dominated Council voted to take new Precinct Plans in Nundah, Indooroopilly, and Carindale ahead to community consultation.
More density and increased height limits are proposed for areas around shopping centres and public transport hubs in Indooroopilly, Nundah and Carindale.
BCC’s sustainable growth strategy argues that the city needs more than 115,000 new homes to be built by 2041 to accommodate a surge in population to 1.5 million people.
According to the draft plan, height limits around the vicinity of the Westfield Carindale shopping centre are set to reach 30 storeys.
In Nundah, limits are set to increase from 12 to 15 around the Nundah Village Hub and from 5-8 to 10 storeys for the surrounding mixed-use zones.
Around the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre precinct, limits will increase from 20 to 25 storeys.
These precincts have been identified by the Lord Mayor’s Better Suburbs Board as suitable for increased density. The Precinct Plans have enjoyed bipartisan support since the first one came to Council in 2023. However, Brisbane Labor Opposition Leader Jared Cassidy moved amendments to the plans calling for the inclusion of affordable housing targets.
“It’s not actually the height that disturbs me. What does disturb me is the total aversion to any affordable housing in this area.”
“Surely these would be ideal places to live for hard-working families doing frontline work on modest incomes.”
“Nope, not according to Adrian Schrinner and his LNP Council. Only those who can afford luxury apartments may be allowed to live there.”
The amendment, which called for new developments to include a percentage of affordable housing aimed at frontline workers on modest incomes, was voted down by the LNP-majority Council.
Public consultation on these plans will open from April 24.
