There might  be a few things that are up for negotiation when it comes to what graces our tables over the festive period but for many Brisbane families,  it just wouldn’t be the same without a Lions Christmas cake.

But it’s not just the great taste that has made the Lions cake become a tradition in many households – it’s knowing that the money spent on the cakes goes back into the community through.

Lions Club volunteers are a familiar sight throughout Brisbane’s shopping complexes.

Indeed since 1965 the Lions Christmas Cake and Pudding program has been at the forefront of fundraising efforts having raised more than $65 million so far.

And 20 year Lions Club veteran Dawn Hebblewhite told Brisbane Now one of the reasons why the cakes are such a hit was the quality.

“I can keep one for 18 months and the reason they last is the quality products that go into them.”

“They are Australian made and people love that and they love that money raised from sales are donated back into the community where they live.”

Cake or pudding – it’s your choice.

The Australian chapter of selling the cakes was said to have started when a Lions member visited the USA and Canada and brought the idea back home from where its popularity has soared.

“Apparently when he came home his mum and granny put the recipe together and it’s the same recipe used today.”

“So it goes to prove it must have been a good recipe.”

Dawn Hebblewhite is doing her bit to help spread the word on why people should be buying a Lions Christmas cake this year.

But Dawn, who is the state co-ordinator for Lions, warned fans not to leave it too late.

“You had better get in early so you’re not disappointed,” she said.

“A lot of clubs have already run out due to demand and they had to order some more in so get yours while you can.”

Dawn said Lions, which has about 25,000 members, was always on the lookout for new faces.

“We are always helping in the community fundraising and helping people. Especially after Covid.”
