PURPLE RAIN: BEST SPOTS TO SEE JACARANDAS THIS SPRING

Every spring, Brisbane transforms into a sea of soft purple as jacaranda trees burst into bloom, carpeting streets, parks, and riverbanks with their delicate petals. From late September to early November, the city becomes a photographer’s dream and a nature lover’s delight — but the magic is fleeting, so timing is everything.

Whether you’re a long-time local or a first-time visitor, here are the top places to soak in Brisbane’s jacaranda season.

🌸 1. University of Queensland, St Lucia

Arguably Brisbane’s most famous jacaranda destination, the University of Queensland’s Great Court is framed by sandstone cloisters and archways, all shaded by towering purple blooms. Legend has it that if a jacaranda flower falls on you before an exam, it’s bad luck — but for everyone else, it’s simply a breathtaking sight. Arrive via the CityCat for a scenic river approach.

🌸 2. New Farm Park

With more than 140 jacaranda trees, New Farm Park is a purple paradise in October. The blooms frame the historic rotunda and rose gardens, while the Brisbane River glistens nearby. Pack a picnic or visit on a Saturday morning to pair your flower-spotting with fresh pastries from the Jan Power Farmers Markets.

🌸 3. Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha

These sprawling gardens are beautiful year-round, but spring brings an extra splash of colour. Jacarandas line the main ring road, making for a perfect walking loop. If you can’t make it to Mt Coot-tha, the City Botanic Gardens also put on a spectacular purple display.

🌸 4. Orleigh Park, West End

For a quieter experience, head to Orleigh Park, where jacarandas line the riverbank in graceful arcs. It’s a peaceful spot for a riverside stroll or a lazy afternoon under the shade.

🌸 5. Wilson Outlook Reserve, New Farm

This small but mighty lookout offers one of Brisbane’s most iconic views — the Story Bridge framed by jacaranda blooms. Visit at sunset for golden light on the petals and the city skyline.

🌸 6. Captain Burke Park, Kangaroo Point

Nestled under the Story Bridge, Captain Burke Park offers a burst of purple against the steel-blue backdrop of the bridge. It’s a great spot for a Sunday morning walk, followed by coffee at one of Kangaroo Point’s riverside cafés.

Tips for Enjoying Jacaranda Season

  • Timing: Peak bloom is usually mid-October, but warm winters can bring flowers as early as late September.
  • Photography: Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light.
  • Transport: Many of these spots are accessible by ferry, making for a scenic day out.

In short: Brisbane’s jacaranda season is short, sweet, and utterly spectacular. Whether you’re chasing the perfect Instagram shot, planning a romantic picnic, or simply enjoying a walk under the purple canopy, these locations will give you the best of the city in bloom.
