In times of crisis we see the best and worst of humanity.
And while the majority of us are doing the right thing and looking out for each other, a handful are taking advantage of our community at one of its most vulnerable times.
The state government is warning of a number of fake charities and fundraising organisations that have been set up amid the current flooding disaster across the South East.
So here’s some tips to help make sure the charity you’re donating to is legit:
- All organisations that publicly fundraise in Queensland are registered with the Office of Fair Trading. You can find that list HERE.
- If approached in person, ask for ID and details about the charity.
- If they only ask for cash, will not accept eftpos/cheque, ask for a cheque made out to their name and not the charity, or do not provide a receipt with the charity’s details, you should not donate to them.
For extra info or to report a fake charity or organisation contact the Office of Fair Trading via their WEBSITE or call 13 74 68.
If you believed you’ve fallen victim to a scam also contact of the Office of Fair Trading or report the matter to police via REPORTCYBER and SCAMWATCH.
