It’s been a huge community campaign to save Archerfield Drift Park and it looks like people power has succeeded.. for now.
The track is allowed to continue operating, while drift track operators submit fresh approvals for Brisbane City Council to consider.
Council threatened to shut the track down because the area being used was originally approved as a car park, not a drift park.
But the drift track has been operating on that land for years, and even before that, the car park was a go-kart track.
The Motorsports community campaigned hard, pushing back against the LNP run Council and starting a petition which has received more than 27,000 signatures.
Over 900 emails were also sent to the Lord Mayor’s office, explaining how much the track means to the community and why it needs to stay.
Manager of the Drift Track, Luke Fink, is happy with the outcome but knows there’s still a way to go.
“Their argument is that we can’t run drifting on that land because the Speedway needs that land to park cars, but we have never run drift and Speedway events at the same time, and couldn’t if we wanted to!” Mr Fink said.
