Concerns are continuing to grow for Brisbane residents when it comes to crime and community safety, and Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner and his Labor Opposition have cast the spotlight on the issue in the lead up to the March 16 local government elections.
The Lord Mayor’s safety announcement sees grants of up to $10,000 given to sports and community clubs for security upgrades including CCTV cameras, alarm systems, locks and patrol systems.
Labor’s Leader of the Opposition, Cr Jared Cassidy has slammed the move, saying Adrian Schrinner should have used his announcement to admit fault in cutting an identical grants scheme back in 2016.
“Schrinner has simply slapped a new name on a grant this LNP Council cut years ago to make it look like it’s a new idea.”

“Ratepayers deserve a Council who focuses on what’s important every day of the year, not just in the lead up to the election,” Cr Cassidy said.
“Now, on the eve of an election, Adrian Schrinner is claiming to care about community safety.
“After 20 years this LNP Council have given up and expect us to let them get away with the bare minimum,” Cr Cassidy said.
Meanwhile, Labor’s Lord Mayoral Candidate Tracey Price has detailed their plan which includes a $2million commitment to new lighting projects across the city, as well as auditing current lighting, including in parks and along footpaths to understand where any gaps are and fix them as a priority.
“Along with improved lighting, our previously announced Mobility Plan will also see a massive uplift in funding to fix broken and dangerous footpaths, as well as $25million a year to construct an additional 50km of paths,” Mrs Price said.
Labor’s plan also includes an investment of $500,000 a year and the introduction of mobile CCTV trailers for the suburbs.
Labor in Council will also be able to proactively work with the State Government and the Queensland Police Services to ensure that our responses to community safety concerns are measured and will make a difference.
“We won’t cut funding to community safety projects like the LNP have and acknowledge that everyone has a role to play in keeping our streets and suburbs safe,” Mrs Price said.
